The Krugerrand was first minted in 1967 with the main objective of supporting South African gold on the market. The name of this gold coin comes from Paul Kruger's portrait on the obverse, while on the reverse side is a gazelle (springbok), one of South Africa's national symbols. The name "Suid-Afrika/South Africa" is indicated in Afrikaans and English.
