This gold coin of 0.3734 of an ounce, or 11.61 grams (g), was minted while Napoleon was Emperor of France, it was created by the imperial decree of October 22, 1808.

On the obverse is represented the laureate head (tête laurée) of Napoleon looking to the left and the name of the engraver, Jean-Pierre Droz. On the reverse, the value of the coin is 40 Francs in a crown formed by two olive branches tied at their base. The date 1812 is framed by the workshop letter A (Paris) and the symbol of the General Engraver.
