While the technical details vary depending on the facility, the process generally includes the following steps:
<ol><li>Collection and reception of raw material: The material is precisely weighed on arrival at the refinery and its gross mass recorded.</li><li>Initial smelting: Metals are melted in high-temperature furnaces to homogenise the batch and allow for an initial sampling and analysis.</li><li>Removal of basic impurities: The liquid metal stream undergoes treatment to remove basic non-precious metals (for instance iron, lead and zinc).</li><li>Chemical or electrochemical refining: This is the heart of the process where gold is separated from other precious metals such as silver.</li><li>Purity testing (assaying): Laboratories validate the final purity level to ensure compliance.</li><li>Casting and minting: Purified gold is poured into moulds to form ingots, or transformed into blanks for minting coins.</li></ol>

Step 1. The Miller process
The Miller process, patented in the 1860s by Francis Bowyer Miller, is a rapid and economical pyrometallurgical method. It consists of injecting chlorine gas into molten gold maintained at a high temperature in a crucible.
The chlorine reacts chemically with impurities and other metals (such as silver and copper), which are transformed into chlorides insoluble in the liquid gold. These rise to the top and either evaporate or are skimmed or poured off.
This method allows for a purity level of 99.95%. It’s commonly used to process large volumes of raw gold on an industrial scale, as it takes less time than electrochemical methods.
Step 2. The Wohlwill process
The Wohlwill process is an electrochemical method for purifying gold. Invented by Emil Wohlwill in the 1870s, it achieves the highest possible degree of purity. 
Gold produced using the Miller process (99.95% pure) serves as the anode and is immersed in an electrolytic bath composed of hydrochloric acid and chloroauric acid.
Under the influence of an electric current, the gold in the anode dissolves and is deposited onto a thin cathode of pure gold (24 carats). This process makes it possible to obtain an exceptional purity of 99.99% (commonly called 999.9 gold).
